Promotion of speech pathology services

Speech pathology services for people with aphasia, including those in the community, should be promoted to all potential referral agencies to ensure appropriate access to services.

Reference: N/A
NHMRC Level of Evidence: GPP

Rationale: It is recognised that some people with aphasia post-stroke may not present to a hospital or be referred to the speech pathology service. It is therefore important that potential referring services (e.g. aged-care facilities, general practitioners, community-based health professionals) are aware of aphasia and how to refer to speech pathology services.

RESOURCES:

How can I promote speech pathology services?

  1. Online - ensure that your workplace website has information about speech pathology services. For example the Queensland Health Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.
  2. Refer people to the Speech Pathology Australia website where they can access more information about services that speech pathologists can provide and also how to find a speech pathologist.
  3. Provide brochures about speech pathology services to local GPs and specialists (e.g. neurologists).
  4. Celebrate Speech Pathology Week in your workplace. Visit the Speech Pathology Australia 'What's On' page for upcoming events
